20 years ago I was told by the doctors that I would not live very long. I had heart failure, high blood pressure, angina and high cholesterol. I was told to change my diet and start exercising. I started running and joined Stella Athletics Club. It was so enjoyable I started entering races and did well in the 60+ and later 70+ races – often coming first, second or third in my age group. At the age of 65 I ran the Comrades Marathon. It was a huge challenge but when I finished the race I had achieved my biggest goal. I am so humbled when young people tell me I am an inspiration and they hope they can be like me when they get to this age. My advice is never, ever give up!
