Elders take active ageing to the next level at Tafta Sports Day

In commemoration of the Week of Older Persons, our popular, annual sporting event took place at the Anna Conradie Centre in South Beach on Thursday, 6 October 2022.

Elders from our four Wellness Centres (Mary Asher, Primrose, Anna Conradie and Oldfield), as well as our Tafta on Ridge and Langeler Towers Homes, showed up in their numbers to compete for the coveted Sports Day Trophy. The event showcased the sprightliness of elders who maintain an active ageing lifestyle.

Ahead of the games, competing teams performed their war cries, filling the room with team pride and spirit. This was followed by games of three tins, bean bag hoop, ball over ball under, dress up race, potato and spoon, and relay. The day ended with lunch and a prize-giving ceremony. First, second and third places were awarded for each game. Overall winners were the host team from Anna Conradie, who took home the Tournament Floating Trophy.

Enthusiasm for Active Ageing

“This year, we saw an explosion of enthusiasm from our elders and staff after a 2-year break in our annual Sports Day,” said Divisional Manager of Operations, Yoshina Kistensamy.  “The Covid-19 period not only triggered anxiety, fear and exclusion, but also prevented combined events between homes. It was heart-warming to see staff and elders mingling to make the day a success.”

Central Area Manager, Yougendri Moodley, thanked volunteers and donors who contributed. “Our Sports Day would not have been a success without the hard work of our coordinators, staff, volunteers and the zest of the participants.” she said. “We are humbled by external contributors, and offer our sincere gratitude to aQuellé, Designer Water, Saayman Danks Electroplating and RSA Market Agents for their sponsorship of refreshments. Thank you for responding to our appeal for help, ensuring our elders were hydrated, satiated and ready to compete.”
