Could you stand by and do nothing
while an older person is victimised
in her own home? We can’t.

When her health began to fail, 81 year old Mrs M went to live with her daughter and son-in-law and her 11 year old grandson. She was so excited to be spending the rest of her life within the warm heart of her family … loved and cared for by her nearest and dearest.

But the joy and hope with which she embarked on this new chapter in her life, quickly turned to despair.

Instead of having her well-being and comfort at heart, the family neglected her, and were verbally abusive. Mrs M lived in fear of saying or doing the wrong thing, and being shouted at.

The strain of living in a toxic environment was taking its toll. Mrs M was desperately unhappy; life just wasn’t worth living. The thought of possibly having to endure years and years of emotional abuse filled her with despair.

So she called our National toll-free
elder abuse helpline to ask for help.

We arranged for a social worker to visit Mrs M in her home, and the report confirmed that she was in distress and at risk. At her request, we arranged for her to move into an older persons’ semi-independent facility, where she receives the care and support she deserves.

If you believe that older people deserve to live out the rest of their days feeling safe, appreciated and contented, please help us rescue more elders in distress.
