Mrs R is one of the lucky ones
At the age of 94 she was still living at home, supported by her two devoted sons.
But things were beginning to fall apart.
Both her sons were well into their 60s themselves. As their mother’s health declined and she became bed bound, they simply couldn’t cope – physically or emotionally. When Mrs R developed pressure sores, they had to face up to the hard truth. Love was no longer enough.
Mom needed full-time frail care. Something the family simply couldn’t afford. They didn’t know what to do or who to turn to.
Please can we count on your support? We’re inviting you to join our special ‘Guardian Angels’ group – and help us watch over frail and vulnerable older people, by providing generous financial support.
- R250 per month provides incontinence wear – preserving dignity and comfort.
- R500 provides nutritious daily meals.
- R1 000 helps fund 24-hour nursing care.
- Anything you can give makes a difference.
Your monthly Guardians donation helps bridge the gap between what families can afford and the true cost of dignified, professional frail care for someone like Mrs R.
She is just one of an increasing number of older people being cared for by ageing spouses, siblings or adult children with limited means. Others are fending for themselves with no means of support other than a state grant that falls far short of the real cost of housing, nutrition, health and care services.
At a stage of life that should bring rest and security, these elders face anxiety, hunger, ill health and the risk of becoming victims of crime.
90-year-olds aren’t ‘other people’. They are us – forty or fifty years from now. Let’s treat them the way we would want to be treated.
‘Sisonke – we are together’ calls on all of us to join together to protect the most vulnerable members of our community.
Please will you play your part by making your Guardian Angels donation today?
