Keeping elders connected

On 18 September 2025, a dream came true for Tafta residents and staff alike, with the launch of WiFi at The Mary Asher Wellness Centre within our Kings Hall building. Residents can now enjoy eight hours of internet access daily at a minimal fee – promoting learning, communication, and engagement. All through their own efforts that brought this project to life!

Ivan Ronald at the WiFi launch To celebrate, the Centre hosted its inaugural “Mary Asher Talk Show”, a virtual discussion on Alzheimer’s disease ahead of Alzheimer’s Awareness Day on 21 September. In line with Tafta’s commitment to supporting the skills and capabilities of older people, all the technical expertise and support for the session was provided by Mr. Ivan Ronald, a resident of Kings Hall.

The session featured Mr Lebohang Molete, Dementia Advocate and Lobbyist with the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity in South Africa (AFHESA). Mr Molete, who holds a Master’s Degree in Health Policy from Oxford Brookes University (UK), shared his personal experience as a secondary caregiver for his 87-year-old father.

A dream 3 years in the making

Ms. Yougendri Moodley, Central Area Manager for Tafta, welcomed guests and shared the significance of the initiative. “Having WiFi at Mary Asher Wellness Centre was a dream three years in the making.”

Digital music quizFor the first time ever, we’ve ditched the pens and paper for our traditional Music Quiz. Elders are now playing on their phones.

Music Quiz goes digital

This digitized quiz is more than just a fun activity. It’s a step toward a digitally empowered community where elders continue to learn, grow, and thrive in an ever-evolving world.

Tafta CEO, Mrs. Femada Shamam, expressed pride in the team effort.

“I am incredibly proud of each resident and staff member who contributed to making this possible,” she said. “Technology has been a key pillar of our strategy launched five years ago. Today we see everything coming together. Listening to our residents’ needs has allowed ideas to flourish.”
