It’s a lifeline to independence, for older people especially
Everyone falls. Children trip when they’re learning to walk. Teenagers stumble on sports fields. Adults slip on wet floors. Falls are part of life.
But as we get older, the consequences can be more serious. A fall that might have once meant just a bruise or scrape can now result in broken bones, a hospital stay, or weeks of recovery.
That’s why it’s so important for elders to have something safe and solid to lean on – a handrail on the stairs, a grab rail in the bathroom, or a sturdy walker. These simple supports make all the difference, helping our elders stay mobile and independent.
At Tafta, we prioritise safety in every way we can. But just as life brings unexpected tumbles, it also brings unexpected needs – and sometimes those fall outside of our planned budgets, which are primarily directed towards care, accommodation and essential services.
In the first six months of this year alone, 58 physically fit older men and women living in our independent accommodation have fallen. Thankfully, falls seldom occur in our frail care and assisted living units where round-the-clock supervision is provided. But in our independent homes – where residents value and enjoy their freedom – the risk is real.
That’s why we urgently need additional mobility aids and safety features. Handrails (from just R300), walkers (from R500) and bedrails (from R800) make our homes safer, enabling elders to live life with dignity, independence and peace of mind.
And because these items are used daily, they don’t last forever. Just like shoes wear out, equipment suffers wear and tear and must be replaced. Your contribution helps ensure that safety is never compromised.
Imagine only being able to admire the garden from behind a windowpane – instead of stepping outside, breathing in the fresh air, and feeling the sunshine on your face.
That’s the gift you’re giving – the chance for elders to continue enjoying the simple pleasures of life, safely and confidently.
Please will you make a contribution today? Every gift counts – and if you’re able to be especially generous, please consider supporting our bathroom renovation project. At around R15 000 per bathroom, replacing bathtubs with safe, easy-to-use showers is a long-term investment in comfort and dignity.
Your kindness helps us create safe, enabling environments for all our elders. Thank you!
