Advocacy
Tafta is an active voice for the rights of older people, both in South Africa and internationally. In her capacity as Africa Ambassador for Commonage (Commonwealth Association for the Ageing), our CEO, Femada Shamam, participates in global conferences which shape policies around elder care and best practices for inclusion and protection of older people.
Sawubona Campaign
In a world where older people are often not acknowledged or even ‘seen’, Tafta’s Sawubona Campaign aims to address age discrimination and promote the rights, protection, and dignity of older people.
‘Sawubona’ is an isiZulu greeting that translates to ‘I see you’. As part of the campaign, we introduce you to vibrant and interesting elders at Tafta.
Elder Abuse
According to the World Health Organisation, more than one in 10 older adults experiences some type of abuse, but few report it. Elder abuse is more prevalent in societies where poverty, crime and unemployment create hardship and frustration. Older people may be robbed, or even killed, for their pension. Neglect and emotional abuse are also common.
Active Ageing
Older people who are active, stimulated and involved in the community enjoy a better quality of life and suffer fewer age related illnesses. TAFTA promotes the concept of active ageing, both in the community and within our residences, by providing a number of programmes and activities designed to engage and inspire older people – physically, mentally and socially.
