Happy Hearts Club crowned victors at Tafta Sports Day

On 7 October 2024, we held our annual Senior Athletics Sports Day at the Curries Fountain Sports Development Centre in Greyville, Durban.

Tafta residents and club members 60 years and older participated in six different challenges. With an astounding display of hand-eye coordination, balance, strength, agility and speed, they broke ageing stereotypes.

Tafta CFO, Nita Sewpersad, praised the efforts of all participants. “It is awe-inspiring to see older people step up and embody the active ageing lifestyle that our organisation promotes,” she said.

“We are often presented with a negative view of ageing. However, the reality is that there is energy, vigour and admirable passion among the older generation.

Contributions of grandparents and elders

“Villages, rural areas and even some urban households are centred around the contributions of grandparents and elders. To every participant who braved the hot sun and competitive energy of our sports day, we see you and we are proud!”

Emotions ran high as the Happy Hearts Club were crowned the victors, following a tie-breaker against John Conradie House & Langeler Towers.

“With a reduced team and our recovery from participating in the Golden Games over the weekend, I was absolutely shocked that we had the highest score overall,” said Lorraine Pretorius, member of the Wentworth-based Community Club.

“We are all so happy and proud to have won Tafta’s 2024 Sports Day. We are so grateful for the support and a great day interacting with the Tafta family. Thank you all very much.”

Amazing day of fun and exciting races

Vigie Reddy, a resident of Tafta Kings Hall, is already looking forward to the 2025 Sports Day. “We had an amazing day of fun and exciting races,” she said. “The meals were excellent. We are very grateful for all the sponsors, staff and volunteers, and look forward to next year.”

Divisional Manager of Operations, Yoshina Kistensamy, thanked Tafta staff and the community for making the event a success.

“Witnessing the effortless integration of our elders with students from Durban University of Technology and ETA College fuels our desire to further promote intergenerational bonding,” she said.

“With the collective efforts of our Operational staff, partner service providers and donors, we were able to exceed expectations for the day and provide an unforgettable experience.
