Lynda and Stephen Verreyne look forward to Christmas lunch at Tafta this festive season.
Thriving through 2025 – a toast to life
For many, Christmas morning is a time of joy – filled with the rustle of wrapping paper, the warmth of family chatter and the smell of roast lunch filling the air. But for many older people, the day can begin in silence – no calls, no hugs, and often, no one to share a meal with.
That’s why we are once again calling on the community to help bring festive joy to elders through our annual Christmas Lunch campaign – a cherished tradition that turns loneliness into laughter and silence into song.
“Too many of our elders spend Christmas alone, without a visit, a call, or a warm embrace,” explains Chief Executive Officer, Femada Shamam. “At Tafta, we believe that no elder should ever feel forgotten, especially during a season that celebrates family and belonging. Our elders are the foundation of our community. They’ve built the world we live in today, and they deserve to be celebrated with love and dignity.”
Sponsor a meal for just R150
With a contribution of just R150, you can provide a full three-course Christmas meal to one elder – a meal served with warmth, respect, and genuine care.
“It’s not just about the food,” added Shamam. “It’s about reminding someone that they matter – that they are seen, valued, and still part of something special. That’s what your donation does.”
Across our homes and centres in Durban, contributions from people like you create moments that linger far beyond the day itself.
“The smells of Christmas are the smells of childhood,” said Mogie Govender, a resident from Tafta Lodge. Another resident, Kay Govender from Langeler Towers, said, “I’m looking forward to the fun, laughter and togetherness that always come with Tafta’s Christmas spirit.”
Festive menu
This year’s festive menu brings all the trimmings of a traditional Christmas feast. Starters of southern-style chicken strips or stuffed brown mushroom, followed by slow-roasted leg of lamb with mint sauce, herb-crusted chicken thigh, with gravy, stuffing and creamy vegetable bake. The vegetarian option boasts a delicious veg wellington, with seasonal roasted vegetables or a butternut, feta and rocket salad. All meals are topped off with the traditional sweetness of a mini fruit cake with warm custard. A halaal option ensures everyone can share in the joy of the occasion.
Each contribution makes a difference. R150 sponsors a meal for one elder, R300 feeds two, and larger gifts allow Tafta to extend the spirit of giving to even more homes and communities. Every plate served is a reminder that kindness still connects us, and that Christmas truly lives where compassion thrives.
“Because of our supporters, our elders don’t just survive – they thrive,” said Shamam. “This campaign is more than a meal – it’s a movement of care, love, and humanity. We’re asking everyone; individuals, families, and businesses to join us in giving our elders the best Christmas yet.”
