2026 AGM shines a spotlight on achievements at Tafta

Tafta’s 67th AGM took place on Tuesday 22 September 2026 at Tafta Lodge in Durban. It was a celebration of achievements, with elders clearly at the heart of everything the organisation does.

Reports from the Chairperson, Mr Wicus Jacobs, CEO Femada Shamam and the Interim Treasurer, Mr Savedra Naidoo carried a common thread – management remains committed to ensuring we continue to provide exceptional care and support for older persons.

The Tafta council is entrusted with providing strategic leadership, ensuring sound governance and safeguarding the long term sustainability of the Association. The finance team is tasked with maximising operating income and managing expenses and investments prudently, while executive management is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organisation.

Despite a substantial reduction in the subsidy from the Department of Social Development, the organisation was able to implement cost-saving measures and secure funding from trusts, corporates, individuals, bequests and international relationships to ensure that Tafta remains on a firm financial footing – good news indeed for the 1 832 elders who call Tafta ‘home’.

In her address, CEO Femada Shamam acknowledged and thanked staff members, volunteers, Council members, donors and partners for their valuable contributions.

“We set out this year to scale, to deepen our impact, to move into new areas, to find new ways of working, and to live the Tafta dream,” she said.

“What we have seen in return is phenomenal performance, incredible growth, resilience and innovation, alongside an honest acknowledgement of our vulnerabilities.

“Year One of Strategy 2030 has not been without its challenges, but it has proven that Tafta is heading in the right direction.”
