Shining a light on the volunteers who serve in our buildings and clubs
Around 240 older volunteers from 11 Tafta buildings and three community clubs were recognised for their invaluable contribution at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Function, held at Glenashley Preparatory School on Monday, 14 September 2026.
The volunteers embraced the theme “Sparkle & Shine for Sisonke,” by dressing in sequins, metallics, glitter and shimmer, stepping out in style for a morning of celebration.
Tafta CEO Femada Shamam described the volunteers as an essential part of the organisation’s daily work.
“Our volunteers are the engine that keeps Tafta running,” she said. “They give of their time, knowledge, energy and care so generously – often without seeking any recognition.
“Whether they are serving as floor monitors or fire marshals, welcoming new residents, helping out at events, participating on committees or simply noticing when someone needs support, their contribution is felt throughout our organisation,” she added.
Active ageing
Volunteering is also a powerful expression of active ageing. It enables older people to remain involved, exercise leadership and continue shaping the communities in which they live.
Our volunteers are not on the margins of Tafta’s work; they are integral to it. This occasion was our opportunity to thank them, celebrate them and remind them that what they do truly matters.
Sincere thanks to Glenashley Preparatory School for hosting the event as part of their Diamond Jubilee commemorations. In celebrating 60 years of shaping young people and influencing South Africa’s future, the school chose to extend its milestone celebration to older people who continue to serve and influence their communities.
Through the Ages
The volunteers were warmly welcomed by the school’s staff and learners before enjoying “Through the Ages” – a vibrant performance that explored music from different eras alongside significant milestones in human civilisation.
The learners gave their best throughout the production, combining humour, music and impressive talent to take the audience on a memorable journey through time. Their enthusiasm and commitment were warmly received by the volunteers, who expressed their appreciation for the performance and the opportunity to enjoy an outing created especially for them.
Following the performance, the volunteers enjoyed refreshments and time together before each received a miniature potted succulent from Tafta. The gift carried a simple but meaningful message: thank you for helping us grow.
Sisonke – “We are Together”
The occasion reflected the spirit of Tafta’s 2026 campaign, Sisonke, which means “We Are Together”. This message was closely echoed by Glenashley Preparatory School’s motto, “Together We Prosper.” Together we celebrated service, strengthened inter-generational connection and affirmed the value of every person’s contribution, regardless of age.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the management, staff and learners of Glenashley Preparatory School for hosting our volunteers and creating an experience that supported their social connection, sense of belonging and overall wellbeing.
