What makes a home feel like home?
Comfortable chairs to sit in … warm and welcoming spaces …. a feeling of belonging. It’s what we all want – and elders living at Tafta on Ridge are no different.
But, after 20 years, this much-loved home needs a little TLC.
That’s how much time has passed since Tafta on Ridge first opened its doors. Since then, it has been ‘home’ to countless older people – including those needing assisted living and frail care.
And, although the standard of care remains outstanding, daily wear and tear have taken their toll on the furnishings. Carpets are old and worn … couches and armchairs have sagged after years of use … curtains are faded and furniture is outdated.
The truth is: Tafta on Ridge is no longer the attractive,
warm and welcoming home we want it to be.
That’s because, as a non-profit organisation, Tafta has to make every rand work as hard as possible. When faced with a choice between maintaining buildings or providing older people with the care, nutrition, support and services they need – care must always come first.
It’s what has made Tafta a leader in elder care for nearly seven decades. But it’s also why major refurbishments sometimes have to wait.
Tafta on Ridge has waited long enough.
And now, with help from our wonderfully caring community – people like you – we’re going to restore it to a place that really feels like home for the 136 elders who live here.
This is what we’ll do with your help:
- Replace old carpets with safe, hygienic and easy-to-maintain flooring
- Paint bedrooms and communal areas in warm, natural tones that create the feeling of a home, rather than an institution.
- Put up new curtains and window treatments
- Replace old bedroom furniture
- Replace old lounge furniture with supportive seating designed for older people
- Replace dining room tables and chairs
- Service hospital and care beds to ensure they remain safe and functional
It’s going to take money. Plenty of it. But if everyone joins in and gives just a little – R500, R1 000, or any amount – it’s amazing how it adds up. I know we can do it! And I know what a difference it will make to the elders who call Tafta on Ridge ‘home’.
They’re not expecting us to turn their home into a luxury retirement facility. Just to create warm and welcoming spaces that bring quiet happiness, comfort, dignity and care.
